Abstract
Objective: This experimental study was designed to investigate the effect of SBY-¥± extract on the weight, plasma, UCP mRNA in Zucker rats.

Material and Methods: The body weight gain, weight of the internal organs(liver, adipose tissue), triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, leptin, expression of UCP mRNA were measured in lean and obese(fa/fa) Zucker rats administered SBY-¥± extract for 3 weeks. These were then compared with those of control groups administered physiological saline.

Results:
1. In lean sample group, the body weight gain significantly decreased in the 3rd week(p<0.05).
In obese sample group, the body weight gain decreased in the 3rd week.
2. In lean sample group, the weight of Liver, EWAT and RTWAT decreased, BAT increased in the 3rd week.
In obese sample group, the weight of Liver, EWAT and RTWAT decreased, BAT significantly increased in the 3rd week(p<0.05).
3. In obese sample group, HDL-cholesterol significantly increased in the 3rd week(p<0.05). TG and LDL-cholesterol decreased in both lean and obese sample group.
4. In lean sample group, leptin decreased, whereas in obese sample group, leptin significantly increased in the 3rd week(p<0.05).
5. In lean sample group, the expression of UCP1 mRNA in BAT increased slightly. In obese sample group, the UCP1 mRNA in BAT highly expressed.

Conclusion: These results shows that SBY-¥± has effects on the management of obesity.
